The origins of Saint Mary’s school lie in the early nineteenth century. It is the amalgamation of what began as two church schools: West Street Ragged School, founded 1860, and the Girls’ School, Northgate, founded 1830. They were amalgamated in 1977 on a site at Oakfield Road and the combined schools renamed Saint Mary’s School.
It is a voluntary-aided school and Saint Mary’s Church takes a close interest in it. Members of Saint Mary’s congregation are governors, and others are employed there in various capacities. |
